Meet Joyce Barringer!
Joyce lives in Gastonia, North Carolina with her three cats Sunney, a Maine Coon and Marley Moe and Sammie Joe who are Bengals.
In addition to living with her fur babies, she lives with her husband, Harry and her son, Jacob. Jacob is a product marketing manager who has his own living space, separate from Joyce and her husband. Joyce says he “is living the good life traveling with his long-time girlfriend.”
Joyce has had an adventurous life before becoming a GoodStarter. After several years working in a salon, Joyce got married and working as a Patient Care Coordinator, earning a certification in medical billing and insurance. After a few years, Joyce got pregnant with Jacob.
While Jacob was in school, Joyce decided to go into teaching. While Joyce was in her third year of school, Jacob (age 11) was diagnosed with IV Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. After nine months of chemotherapy, Jacob won his battle with cancer, but would need continued care afterwards (weekly visits to the after-care center). Even today, Jacob has monthly infusions at home to remain healthy.
Joyce earned her teaching degree and for years was the educational director at the Schiele Museum, a contract position that allowed her the flexibility to devote time caring for her son. After working at Schiele, Joyce held many small contract positions before finding her home at Pleio, where she has been for the past seven years.
“Initially, I was interested in working as a GoodStarter because it allowed me the flexibility to choose my own schedule.”
But that’s not what’s kept Joyce working at Pleio year after year. “What I’m doing each day and the connections I make with each patient I call has been my mainstay.”
“Being a GoodStarter is very satisfying for me because I’m given the opportunity to help patients with their medication, which is a very private and important aspect of their lives. This provides me with a feeling of accomplishment.”
Although Joyce works from home, she’s connected to her fellow GoodStarters through the GoodStart social network and chat features. “I love that I get to stay connected with the company through social chat and never feel alone while working from my home office. Seeing daily inspirations, reading about my colleagues’ lives, and the overall feeling of camaraderie is wonderful and helps me feel attached every minute.”
“In the past, I worked various work from home jobs that didn’t provide me with the feeling of self-worth that I now have at the end of each day while working at Pleio.”
Thank you to Joyce for sharing your story, but more importantly giving yourself to our patients each and every day. And thank you to all our GoodStarters who are the backbone of what we do at Pleio – which is helping patients break through the emotional barriers associated with adherence and manage their healthcare journey.
